lyrics

Perhaps I killed the gambling man, that evil soul who rested here
He wasted all of his woman’s wage, so I put him down today.

I put him down with a loaded gun, the powders smell the deafening hum
Then out in to the wasteland I led, to have him an unmarked grave.

I thought I heard a spirit cry, I’ll haunt you till the end of days
I thought I heard a spirit cry, you’ll never get away

I passed on by a shanty town, on my way to lay his body down
A passer-by cried the gamblers dead, I turned said “be on your way”

I reached the spot and dropped his body down, took my shovel and I hit the ground
I worked until I broke a sweat, then rolled him into his grave

I thought I heard a spirit cry, I’ll haunt you till the end of days
I thought I heard a spirit cry, you’ll never get away
I took my leave I didn’t spare a thought, back to town I felt no remorse
Into saloon with drink in hand, entering a drunken state

Was then I realised just what I’d done, I grabbed my gun and began to run
Out of town into the night, back to the unmarked grave

But when I reached the grave what did I see? There was a figure with its back to me
Was then I saw the light shine through his chest, the gambler had rose from the grave.

I thought I heard a spirit cry, I’ll haunt you till the end of time
I thought I heard a spirit cry, you’ll never get away
